Pros Point Of View With Shah Bobonis UFC 143 After Thought
Sorry My blog is a little later than usual. I have them done by Sunday most of the time but I was watching the UFC at a local watering hole and was not completely focused on the fights. I wanted to watch the fights on line before I made any analysis on them.
I picked three fights and I went 1-3, last two weeks I’m sub five hundred on my picks. I’m starting to rethink how much I know about this sport. What really surprised me about UFC 143 was the striking of Fabricio Werdum. What a complete 180! I remember just a few fights back Werdum’s striking was almost comical and Saturday night he gave a tuff Roy Nelson the business. Nelson had a huge cut on his four head that was a product of getting banged like a piñata. If Werdum could improve his wrestling at the same rate as his striking, watch out heavyweight division.
The Main event wasn’t the most thrilling fight of all time but it was a solid performance by Condit, who I also did not pick to win. He mixed in his Thai boxing techniques with some great footwork and ring generalship. Diaz seemed content to try to cut off the cage and volume punch, which is his usual M.O. Diaz on this night got countered and controlled all night. Condit had a mix of front and side kicks that controlled distance and his footwork allowed him to spin off the cage at the first sign of being cornered. Just a dominate performace by Condit; he and his corner had a flawless game plan! I read that Ronda Rousey was bashing Condit for “running for 25 minutes”. Ronda if this fight had turned into a grappling match I MIGHT be interested in your analysis. But with four fights under your belt and not being able to hit water is you fell out of a boat, don’t hate on Condit. This is like an anorexic chick being a food critic. The most disturbing news is that Dana is talking rematch already. To start, the fight wasn’t that great. Two, it was pretty one sided. Finally, what is Diaz going to do to change the dynamic of the next fight; he was dominated in the stand up and Diaz has never been known as a stud wrestler. I for one am not interested in watching a rematch between these two. I just hope Diaz isn’t the new Urijah Faber, in the sense that no matter how many deserving contenders there are for SOME reason they are put in positions to get numerous title shots. I’d like to see Koscheck VS Diaz and if I were Condit Id wait for GSP.
Turning the page, I’m not buying the hype on Barao being the next coming of Aldo, he’s a good fighter but Aldo is a one in a decade type talent like Silva or GSP.
Changing subjects, Ill be defending my Combate Exttremo featherweight title March 16th in Monterrey, Mexico. Then I’m hoping to fight a month later April 6th in Florida’s premier promotion CFA. Stay tuned for details.
